Shelly Coleman’s work is rooted in a deep reverence for nature, exploring the balance between control and spontaneity. She juxtaposes stability with the fluidity of water, layering transparent paint to create depth and an interplay between near and far, seen and unseen—revealing subtle symbolism throughout her work.
Inspired by nature, family, and storytelling, her paintings invite reflection on memory and the beauty of impermanence. Often capturing a single moment in time, she uses travel as a metaphor for life’s journey, highlighting the quiet, everyday spaces where meaning emerges. As a mother of four, Shelly draws inspiration from her children’s imaginative worlds. Their doodles and spontaneous creativity inform her Foggy Window series—dreamlike works that evoke road trip nostalgia, creative freedom, and the fleeting nature of passing moments.

Shelly is a graduate with a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Utah State University. Since then Shelly has embarked on a creative journey marked by participation in numerous group and solo exhibitions. She has also taught art in High School and painted over 100 murals in public and private settings. Her artistic evolution is not confined to the studio; Shelly also embraces the outdoors alongside her husband and four children, finding solace and inspiration in the beauty of the natural world.
